Adopting sustainable changes in your bathroom routine can be kinder to the planet, your purse and your skin too.

Here are 12 easy sustainable bathroom swaps:

Swap makeup/face wipes for cloths – Made from polyester, makeup wipes are to blame for 93% of blockages in Britain’s sewers, according to Water UK – and the government has pledged to eradicate them, and all other avoidable plastic waste, by 2025. Makeup wipes that contain microplastics, end up in landfill and can clog our sewers.

Lather up with a bar – Reduce your plastic consumption by switching to beauty bars wherever possible. You can find shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, cleanser and so much more at most retailers. We love UpCircle Cleansing Bars.

Switch to Bamboo cotton buds – The UK uses more plastic cotton buds than any other European country– a staggering 13.2bn a year.

Change to a wooden toothbrush – Most manual toothbrushes are made of plastic and, if we follow the advice of our dentists, should be replaced every three months – meaning in the UK alone, that’s a potential 264 million brushes thrown away every year.

Make sure you have a recycling bin in your bathroom too – just 50% of packaging is recycled in the bathroom, compared to 90% in the kitchen. Why not save the effort of remembering to take your empty plastics downstairs (in time we hope you’ll be using less anyway!) and invest in a recycling bin for your bathroom too. Change your toilet brush – Switch to a silicon option. Silicon will last much longer than the plastic bristled option plus it’s more hygienic and you can find options that are made from recycled materials.

Use a natural Loofah – Use a natural loofah instead of plastic. Better for your planet and wonderful for your skin, it willexfolitae and clean at the same time. If you have sensitive skin you can try a konjac sponge, don’t be put off by the hard rock like consistency, just add water and it becomes soft and supple.

Dental Floss – If you do as the dentist says and floss regularly then you will know how much you can get through. Did you know, most dental floss is made from plastic and not biodegradable? There are more sustainable options though, made from bamboo and corn fibre, products that are compostable and come in cardboard or glass packaging, so are completely plastic free.
