If you can repurpose without spending or having to make any real changes surely that’s the simplest of switches. Plastic tupperware is better than cling film but glass storage is even better. The main reason is because it can often be free. Think about glass jars from the fridge, especially those big ones full of pickled onions, once they are done give them a wash and use instead of tupperware, the tight seal from the lid helps keep your leftovers fresh for days. Or if you want to go for a chic and sustainable worktop use storage jars from the likes of kilner, with a rubber tight seal a decent jar will last a lifetime and keep your food super fresh. If you want to replace your tupperware but jars aren’t for you, glass tupperware is another option. They work in exactly the same way as plastic but with no risk of staining. 

• Beeswax Wraps: If you look after them properly, beeswax wraps can last up to a year. Many have been ethically sourced and made, meaning they’re both good for you and the environment and when they do come to the end of their life span, you can pop them in your green waste, as they naturally decompose.

It’s worth noting that beeswax wraps aren’t air-tight and won’t keep highly perishable items (like raw meat) fresh, so it’s best to use them to cover foods you’ll eat within a couple of hours or the next day.. For longer-lasting leftovers or smellier items like cheese, you’re probably better off sealing them up in reusable glass or plastic containers.

They might be a little more expensive to buy at first, but they’re much more environmentally friendlier than plastic clingfilm and foil options — and they look pretty too! If you want to make your own, you can do so by melting down beeswax and soaking cloth in the liquid.

Reusable Straws: If you’re looking for an eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws, grab a stainless steel reusable straw, which can be easily cleaned after use. These last many years if looked after properly, so are definitely worth the investment.
